How to make international calls on iPhone

You can use the Phone app with your carrier’s international rates, or use an internet calling service. Choose the route first, then enter the destination number in international format.

Use the Phone app or Safari

Phone app → your carrier

  1. Check your carrier’s international rate or add-on for the destination. Roaming is a separate question if you are outside your home network.
  2. Open Phone and the keypad. Touch and hold 0 to enter +, then enter the country code and the rest of the international number.
  3. Check the number and place the call. Your carrier handles the call and charges under your plan.

Safari → an internet calling service

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Mobile data can have a separate charge, especially while roaming.
  2. Open the calling service in Safari. Type or paste the full international number, including + and its country code.
  3. Check the quote and account requirements. Allow microphone access when you start the calling flow, then keep the calling page open.

In Parlacall, the quote comes before the call. The number’s availability and price must be checked; a correctly formatted number alone does not prove it can connect.

Give Safari permission to use the microphone

If you dismissed the microphone request, check the website’s settings in Safari’s Page Menu. In iPhone Settings, go to Apps → Safari → Microphone to review the general Ask, Deny or Allow setting. Menu names can differ by iOS version.

Use Ask if you want to approve each site’s request. Reopen the calling page after changing a permission and try its audio check. An orange indicator shows that an app is using the microphone; it is not proof that the other person can hear you.

If you cannot hear the call

  • Check microphone permission, volume and the selected audio device. A Bluetooth headset can change where sound goes.
  • Keep Safari visible while calling. Avoid switching networks halfway through a call.
  • Check that the full number has the right country code and no duplicated domestic prefix.
  • If the service rejects the number or the quote is unavailable, check the organisation’s official overseas contact details. Do not assume more credit fixes an unsupported number.

Using Wi-Fi Calling in the Phone app? That still follows your carrier’s rules. Read Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling guidance and your carrier’s tariff. Last checked 15 October 2026.

The zero-key shortcut above is for Apple’s native Phone keypad. In a browser text field, type or paste + directly.

Check the rate for your number

Paste the full international number, including + and the country code. The quote shows the number type, available calling modes and price per minute.

Parlacall connects a browser call to an ordinary phone number. You need internet access and microphone permission; the recipient doesn’t need Parlacall. Check availability before you add credit.

Questions before you call

Does Wi-Fi Calling make an international call free?

Wi-Fi Calling uses your carrier’s calling service over Wi-Fi. It does not by itself remove international charges. Check your carrier’s plan and destination pricing before you use it.

Does the recipient need an iPhone?

Not for a call to an ordinary supported phone number. The recipient answers through their phone service. App-to-app services have their own account and device requirements.

Can I switch apps or lock the screen during a browser call?

Keep the calling page open and your iPhone awake during the call. Do not assume a browser call will continue after you switch apps or lock the screen.
