Best apps for international calls: choose by the number you need
If both people use the same app, start with an app-to-app call. To reach a bank, office or landline, choose a service that calls ordinary phone numbers.
Start with the person you’re calling
They can use the same app
For a personal conversation, an internet call between app users can be enough. Agree on the app and check that both people have a working connection.
You have to dial a phone number
For a bank, public office or someone without the app, look for ordinary-number calling. Check the full number’s price and whether special numbers are supported.
Six options for different kinds of calls

Check the full cost before paying
- Look up the exact destination and number type. A landline rate may differ from a mobile rate.
- Check the top-up amount, renewal terms, connection charges and billing increments before paying.
- Decide whether you need occasional outgoing calls or a phone system with an incoming number, messaging and team controls.
- If you are replacing Skype, read the Skype alternative guide before moving credit or changing how people reach you.

Can a calling app reach a landline?
- A phone-number calling service can reach supported landlines. An app-to-app call reaches an account in that app. Check which kind of service you are buying before adding credit.
Are free app calls the same as free international phone calls?
- No. A free call between app users does not include a call to an ordinary mobile or landline number. Internet data charges can also apply.
What should a team compare?
- Check who owns the balance, how members get access, and whether usage and invoices are visible to the account owner. A personal calling app is not automatically a shared team account.
